The Sandi Klein Creative Woman in Film Award

VISION

The Sandi Klein Creative Woman in Film Award aims to recognize that creativity is not merely artistic expression–it can also be a force for connection, understanding, and social change. The recipients of the Award will embody the belief that through filmmaking, they can educate, entertain as well as inspire, challenge assumptions, and work to encourage a more just and compassionate world.

AWARD CRITERIA

The films of the Awardee nominees will align with the Teaneck International Film Festival's mission of "Activism: Making Change.” We will look for evidence of that mission in each nominee’s commitment to creative excellence, social impact, advocacy and the ways they reflect the creative spirit of Sandi Klein. For example, we will look for:

Creative Excellence

  • Demonstrated achievement in film as a director, producer, sceenwriter, editor, cinematographer, animator, actor, composer, or in any other creative filmmaking role.

  • A distinctive artistic voice that contributes meaningfully to the cinematic landscape.

  • Innovation, originality, excellence and courage in moviemaking.

Social Impact Through Storytelling

  • Work that elevates the lives and voices of women or other underrepresented people, communities, and perspectives.

  • Films that encourage dialogue, understanding, civic engagement, or positive social change.

  • Demonstrated willingness to address challenging, timely, or uncomfortable issues through film.

Commitment to Advocacy

  • Sees their creative work as a catalyst for conversation and understanding.

  • Engages with audiences beyond the screen through education, mentorship, public dialogue, or community involvement.

  • Is a public voice for equity, inclusion, and greater opportunities for women in the arts and media.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Open to women working in any creative capacity within the film industry.

  • The nominee’s film will be included in the year’s festival roster.

  • Nominees may be emerging or established artists.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Candidates for the Sandi Klein Creative Woman in Film Award will be identified by the members of the TIFF Screening Committee and recommended to the Award Committee.

  • The Award Committee will review all nominees, gather relevant material, and make the final selection.

  • The Awardee will be announced in September, in advance of the November Festival, and receive the Award at the film’s screening.
