2019 is the 80th anniversary of Carl Laemmle’s death as well as the year TIFF is showing the documentary about the life of this extraordinary Jewish-German immigrant. Titled Carl Laemmle, the film details how Laemmle founded Universal Pictures and saved over 300 Jewish families from Nazi Germany. Pictured here is Laemmle followed by stills from 4 of the 400 films he was involved in: Phantom of the Opera (1925), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), Dracula (1931), and Show Boat (1929).
